History

A club that has earned a reputation as a highly respected bowling club. Fifty four years of commitment by volunteers and staff has gained the Club an enviable record for providing outstanding greens, quality service and facilities to members and guests alike.

Ocean Grove Bowling Club Incorporated opened the Club’s first greens in 1954 having purchased five blocks of land for 517 pounds one year earlier.

From those humble beginnings the Club now boasts one of the most modern and family friendly bowling and hospitality complexes available. Facilities now include 2 lawn greens, 1 carpet green, TAB, Lounge Bar, Members Lounge, 2 Function Rooms, Gaming Room & Leleans Restaurant. Café. Winebar.

Our memberships have risen dramatically in recent times; it has gone from 136 in September 1955 to over 6000 in June 2016. Our Club has developed so quickly & so dramatically since first opening in 1954. In 2010 we underwent major redevelopment to give the Club a brand new image, these renovations gave the club a fresh, modern look with the same positive atmosphere.We have a photo mural along our corridors at the club to show you how the club has developed since opening day back in the 1950’s. The Ocean Grove Bowling Club Inc. was official established in 1958.On the greens in recent years both our Saturday Pennant teams and Midweek teams have reaced the pinnacle of pennant competition taking out their respective Victorian State Pennant Crowns.

About Us

Why and when the club was founded

Ocean Grove Bowling Club was formed in 1953 when the first freehold property was purchased. Following construction of one green and a modest clubhouse, the opening occurred in 1954.

A tradition of progressive achievement has developed:  The original clubhouse extended in 1955 and again in 1958.  In 1997 $1.8M extensions and renovations project was completed.

The club developed progressively over the years and bought adjoining residences and the next door Ocean Grove Bowling Club Tourist Park.  In 1993 Tabaret gaming machines were introduced.

Ocean Grove Bowling Club is an incorporated association, registered 1st May 1985, commencing as an unincorporated body in 1953.  The club was developed to provide the small seaside with a lawn bowls club.

Present Function or Purpose

At the time of founding the sporting activities of the Club were and still are its major purpose as can be seen by the mission statement. This is a fifty year old lawn bowls club offering bowls, food, liquor, gaming and wagering services to its members and eligible guests and visitors.

The Club is a large bowling club by State of Victoria standards. The Club conducts a busy program of pennant, tournament and social bowls.

It prides itself on a history of strong financial performance, progressive achievement and a reputation for delivering high quality bowls facilities, programs and other services.

“To achieve excellence in the provision of lawn bowling, hospitality, social and wagering activities for members, guests and visitors. To be a desirable focal point for residents of Ocean Grove and surrounding areas interested in these activities and to maximize revenue for the Ocean Grove Bowling Club Inc by providing products and services that meet expectations across all elements of the leisure and entertainment offer.”

All activities within the club are conducted to support the sporting activities and facilities of the club.  Members receive discounts on all purchases within the venue and all functions, entertainment and operations are designed around the requirement of the bowling/sporting sector of the club.  We pride ourselves on the friendliness of our staff and members – a happy smile, a wave and a “hello”.

Facilities and Services Offered by the Club to Members and Visitors

We offer our members, guests and visitors bowling conditions unsurpassed anywhere in the district, a clubhouse which is the envy of all of our sister/competitor clubs and entertainment offers (bistro, bar, gaming, wagering and social) which are not matched at any other bowling club in Geelong and district.

The club has two grass greens and one carpet green, members lounge, gaming room and members discounts are provided throughout the venue. There are excellent meals for lunch and dinner 7 days a week, a variety of beers on tap and a good selection of wines and spirits, free tea & coffee is always available.

Numerous other facilities and benefits are offered to members and guests, these are too numerous to mention individually.
